Henry Van Bouchaute, a trucker from Buena Park, swam over 20 miles from Kino Bay to reach help for two shipmates and a third crew member after a motor failure left them stranded in the Gulf of California. Mexican coast guard cutter later intervened. Van Bouchaute endured dehydration, exhaustion, burns, and exposure before rescue.
Former Vice President Richard Nixon criticized Pennsylvania Governor William Scranton for wavering on entering the Republican presidential race. Nixon said Scranton had a fighting chance but must be his own man and avoid appearing controlled by others after reports of Eisenhower’s influence.
The former vice president said a quick change in a call shows weakness and dismissed Goldwater's criticisms as based on inaccurate press reports. Nixon arrived in Kennedy from London and then flew aboard an El Al jet.
A light earthquake struck San Francisco and surrounding Bay Area late Friday afternoon. There were no injuries or damage reported, and UC seismologists called it a small local tremor measuring about 3 on the Richter scale.

Since 1961 levy and 1963 land plans, about 1,900 acres have been optioned or purchased with emphasis on North Black River and Carlisle West Branch reserves. Indian Hollow Sheldon Woods and Charlemont Creek area acquisitions proceed as negotiations continue.
Reported from Connie Davis CT describes a Civil Defense shelter drill where about 40 women and 70 to 82 years old tested communication and endurance. Participants remained calm, shelters maintained ventilation, calories and water tracked, and a daylong exercise faced temperature changes and limited activity.

Winds from west to southwest 17 to 24 knots today and tonight, shifting to northwest 15 to 20 knots late tonight. Partly cloudy with a few showers this morning mainly in the eastern Lake Erie area.
