Berger notes overcrowding as the main issue after the district shifts seventh graders to elementary schools this year. Enrollment at the junior high falls from 1,900 to 1,150 while teachers focus on English and math improvements and maintain standardized test procedures for better student growth.
Oberlin Allen Hospital filed a civil suit in Common Pleas Court against former Executive Director Jeffrey C. Palin and his daughter Annette for misappropriating hospital funds and insurance receipts. The complaint cites undisclosed losses from banking and insurance accounts with an independent audit underway. Current hospital chief Duane Horning notes a possible loss around twenty eight thousand dollars.
Detroit News reports 38 workers at General Motors Fisher Body plant in Elyria filed for workmen’s compensation citing health problems blamed on foam used in seat manufacturing. State officials could not verify without case numbers. OSHA says no recent hazard reports. union leaders and company spokesman call for review. Other area plants receive generally positive safety reviews.
Gerald Bennett of Lorain County Red Cross is temporarily assigned as recreation director at the Ft Indiantown Gap refugee camp near Harrisburg Pa. He oversees crafts, education, English training, and entertainment for about 5000 single male refugees while processing slows. As of 5 p.m. Wednesday the camp housed 18109 refugees. Many fear remaining in limbo amid immigration red tape.
All Scouts Weekend in North Olmsted drew Brownies to Explorer Scouts with a parade float by Brownie Troop 406. The event led to activities at North Olmsted Park where camp is set up, though heavy rains dampened the weekend yet failed to dampen scout enthusiasm as many stayed through Sunday.
The Lorain County Historical Society hosts an antique car show and summer festival at The Hickories Elyria featuring the theme Festival of Wheels. Gates include food, ice cream social, games, tours, and a bicycle exhibit with Charles and Chuck Buechele demonstrating an 1886 high wheeler and a 1898 safety bike.
This weekend North Olmsted hosts a Whistle Off at the Great Northern Mall Sears end. Preliminary rounds Friday at 7 p.m. and finals Saturday at 1 p.m. Prizes range from 50 to 75 dollars for top solo, group, unique, and under 16 winners.
