Bryan Allen, 26, aboard the featherweight Gossamer Albatross, flies 15 miles from Cap Gris Nez in France to a beach near Calais in under three hours. He earns a 200000 dollar prize as cheers rise from 300 spectators and reporters.
John Wayne, the American hero, died of cancer at UCLA Medical Center at 5:35 p.m. PDT with his children at his side. He was 72 and had fought the disease since 1964, remaining awake and in pain yet proud to be with family. His burial will be private. donations go to the John Wayne Memorial Fund. Colleagues remembered him as a landmark presence in film with about 200 movies.
The North Ridgeville school board voted to retry a bond issue on the November ballot to fund additions at the high school and Lear North Elementary School. The plan, likely about 9.4 million, follows three prior defeats and aims to ease overcrowding with 40 classrooms, a media center, new cafeteria, and science labs at the high school plus 15 classrooms and gym space at Lear North.
State Department tentatively identifies the hijacker as Eduardo Guerra Jiminez, a former Cuban air force pilot who defected in 1969. He forced Delta Flight 1061 with 194 passengers to Havana, claiming an explosive in a bag. Cuban authorities awaited him as the plane landed in Havana and returned to Fort Lauderdale.
Elyria Board of Education discussed leasing Ely Stadium to the Elyria Jaycees for the annual fireworks show. They would require strong safety measures, proper crowd control, and protection of the field and sod. The Jaycees have lost previous sites including Midway Mall Cascade Park locally. other local properties were also declined.
Elyria's city auditor's office is a danger zone as ceiling plaster falls and leaks persist since 1974. Clerks dodge a plastic canopy to keep the area safe while avoiding debris during the rainy season. Auditor Beverly Renner says one third of the room is unusable due to the deteriorating ceiling.
