Optimistic Senator Sees Rhee Waiting on Truce Move

A high ranking Republican senator close to the issue says South Korea’s President Syngman Rhee is unlikely to approve or reject a truce soon. He notes Rhee may abstain and watch talks after a cease fire order. Switzerland joins a five nation truce commission with India Sweden Switzerland Czechoslovakia and Poland. Indian troops would help police POW camps while the commission studies repatriation and disputes. Rhee’s opposition to Indian forces on Korean soil may diminish as officials view the stance as gradually softening.

East Carlisle Buses Restrict to Public School Pupils

East Carlisle School District voters choose to provide transportation only for students attending public schools. County prosecutor Paul J. Mikus advised the board that transporting private or parochial students may be illegal, citing 1942 opinions. The board also hired two new teachers and approved a sewing machine purchase for Home Economics classes.

Pedestrian Seriously Injured in Route 57 Crash Near La Porte

Stephan Stefanick 21 of Dewhurst Road suffered a compound fracture to his left leg after being struck by a northbound car driven by James Korka 40 of R D 2 Elyria on Route 57 south of La Porte at 7 30 p m. Stefanick taken to Elyria Memorial Hospital. Korka held in county jail for investigation. A second crash on Middle Avenue involved Mary Bungard 269 Stanford Avenue and E A Schwartz R D 3 Elyria. Schwartz backed into Bungard's car as it rested.

Route 57 Closure Extends to Evening Repair Work

State Highway Patrol announced Route 57 remains closed from Elyria Avenue to Elyria to clear debris after a brief reopening attempt. Two cranes are in use at Adelbert and Griswold roads with expected re opening around six o clock this evening.

Strike Ends as Carpenters Accept 3 Dollar Hour Wages

The Lake Erie District Council of Carpenters approved a contract with Lorain County builders for a 20 cent rise to 3.00 per hour retroactive to May 20, ending a strike. Some retroactive pay applies only to active workers. Final talks occurred at 4 p.m. Wednesday, with the agreement valid through May 1, 1954.

Elyria Blood Donor Drive Aims June 16 Visit

Recruitment for the June 16 Bloodmobile in Elyria is underway led by Mrs. I. L. Shepherd and the Women's Organizations Division of the Red Cross. Local groups such as the Newcomers Club Elyria Woman's Club and the YWCA back the effort with plans and donors including a member planning her 25th pint.
