A Hughes Air West DC9 with 50 aboard plummeted into a California gorge after colliding with a Marine F4 Phantom. Nine bodies located in the wreckage. A radar officer parachuted to safety, the sole reported survivor among crew. Fire officials and deputies surveyed the smoldering debris overnight.
A propjet of Allegheny Airlines crashed in heavy fog while landing at Tweed New Haven Airport. Yale New Haven Hospital reported at least 25 confirmed dead, with possible toll reaching 29. The aircraft struck a power line, destroyed five summer cottages, and landed in marshland after originating from Washington and New London before a planned Newport News leg.
Blustery conditions across Northern Ohio yesterday caused limited damage though two funnel cloud sightings were reported near Elyria and South Amherst. One child, David Beal 7, remained in fair condition with head injuries from a toppled ladder during the storm.
Abner G Witt 47 Amherst was released on probation by Lorain County Common Pleas Judge Paul J Mikus after a April 15 manslaughter sentence. He was previously charged with first degree murder in the Jan 1 shooting death of his estranged wife Liza Jane. The court cited a penitentiary report recommending shock treatment and ordered three years of probation with enrollment in an adult education course to learn reading and writing. A petition signed by 40 supporters was presented.
Two dozen drawbridges in New York City were abandoned by operators, paralyzing interborough traffic for cars trucks and buses. Police towed away abandoned Department of Water Supply trucks as the major tieup continued, disrupting crossings and city life.
Local 237 Teamsters representing the drawbridge operators led walkouts over a city pension plan for 120000 city employees. About one million vehicles use the spans daily. At 630 am operators swung bridges up and left posts, citing federal regulation for free ship passage when untended.
A 700 member AFL CER Local 758 laborers union struck construction sites after an eleventh hour meeting with the Ohio Contractors Association failed to resolve contract differences. Final offers were just 15 cents apart, with the union pushing for larger raises while the OCA proposed a 45 cent raise over 11 months. The dispute affects Lorain County projects where unions had signaled work stoppages and site picket threats.

Alfred Divencenzo, 40, of Island Road Grafton died after a tar tank exploded on his farm Thursday causing a barn fire. He suffered third degree burns over much of his body and was moved from Elyria Memorial Hospital to Cleveland Clinic where he died shortly after 2:58 PM. His wife Wanda aided as the accident occurred when he used a welding torch to remove a bottom from a ho-gallon tank.
North Olmsted police report a newborn male infant was found wedged among logs and rocks in the Maple Grove area of Rocky River Reservation by Boy Scouts during a park cleanup. Park rangers will lead the investigation. no mother located. coroner to rule on cause tomorrow.
