Auto club policy on licenses ruled illegal by state
State officials said the Cleveland Auto Club and its Elyria branch illegally denied boat and motor licenses to nonmembers. David Meeker of the Department of Natural Resources said the club must stop the practice or lose its registrar designation. The Ohio Attorney General’s office confirmed license issuance must follow state law, with the chief of the watercraft division as registrar’s authority. The Chronicle Telegram first reported Elyria’s denial of licenses since June 1 and prompted state action. Elyria officials sought registrar designation elsewhere.
