NASA tests flying saucer decelerator for Mars landings
NASA plans a test of the Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator LDSD aboard a high altitude balloon above Hawaii. The 7000 pound craft will rise to 180000 feet, spin on four rockets, inflate a ring, deploy a 100 foot parachute, and splash down off Kauai if the sequence proceeds.
