Community editorial urges Elyria voters to approve Issue 6 a one half percent income tax increase while keeping it separate from city council races. It argues the tax is needed to stabilize finances avert default and fund services noting the levy lasts three years and could raise credit stability.
Lorain County and nearby residents vote tomorrow with 44 000 turnout expected and 108 904 registered voters. Elyria seeks a one half of one percent income tax for three years to cover deficits while 10 school issues, two county levies, three in Sheffield Lake and one in Amherst are on the ballot. Polls open 6 30 a m to 7 30 p m with an estimated 41 percent turnout.
H R Haldeman and John N Mitchell were ordered to report to prison by noon June 22 to begin serving their 2 to 8 year sentences for Watergate crimes. Sirica noted the June 22 deadline to settle affairs. Haldeman may go to Lompoc California, Mitchell potentially to Allenwood Pennsylvania as the nation nears the Watergate endgame.
UPI reports Puerto Rican Day disturbances in Chicago left two dead and over 190 injured as riot spread through Humboldt Park. Police arrested more than 130, looting eight stores, burning two buildings, with 48 officers and 80 civilians hurt.
Photo caption notes a gunman was arrested after a confrontation with police last night. A parked police motorcycle was carried away and dumped in a lagoon as Humboldt Park patrols set up a command post. Police Supt James Rochford said the area has quieted and mop-up operations have begun.
London AP Uganda health minister Henry Kyemba defected in Britain saying more than 100,000 Ugandans have been killed since Idi Amin seized power in 1971. He told the Sunday Times he fled after fearing execution. An Amin aide dismissed the defection as unsurprising and noted charges against Kyemba. The Sunday Times cited the International Commission of Jurists figure as probably correct.
A Conrail derailment on West River and West Bridge streets left thirteen boxcars off the tracks after a loose wheel on the 13th car of an 80 car train. No injuries were reported and a second derailment in a month spurred calls for a full investigation by local officials and Ohio lawmakers.
United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young, near King when he was shot in Memphis, says he viewed King's death as a blessing since King had done all he could. He describes private diplomacy, Cuba Angola ties, and calls for Ugandan leader Amin to disappear from politics, amid weather and local page details.
