Robinson Defeats Villemain To Gain Middle Title Shot
Ray Robinson of New York defeated Robert Villemain of France by 15 round decision before 22 024 at Municipal Stadium to become the No 1 middleweight challenger and secure a shot at the 160 pound title before September 28. The Pennsylvania Boxing Commission treated the bout as a title fight, reinforcing NBA rules that the La Motta Graziano winner must defend within 90 days. Villemain pressed the pace but Robinson landed the cleaner blows and staged two near knockouts, including a 12th round knockdown from two rights.
