Exemptions In Income Taxes To Be Lower
Congressional tax makers seek to broaden the tax base by lowering exemptions for single and married filers to raise more revenue for national defense. Aimed at adding at least 200 million and possibly up to 1 billion annually, they warn the move would bring more taxpayers into the system and shift taxes toward lower brackets. The plan would make exemptions $800 for singles and $2,000 for married, keep a $400 dependent credit, and could set off a shift toward permanent law with tax installments due next March.
