Rainfall Relief Helps Ohio Crops Cool in Heat Wave

Thunderstorms and overcast skies brought needed relief to Ohio cooling temperatures from 90 to 75. The U S Weather Bureau forecasts continued cool weather with a chance of more rain, and last night’s rain was widespread, expected to revive drought‑stricken crops.

Elyria High marks centennial reunion and milestone

Hundreds of Elyria High School graduates return Wednesday for the fifty-fifth annual Alumni Association meeting as the school celebrates its centennial charter. The program features Frank M. Shelton and classes from 1875, 1880, and 1885, with a historical exhibit open to the public Tuesday. Dancing and special dinners precede the event in the high school and gym.

Graf Zeppelin Lands in Friedrichshafen After Record Flight

The Graf Zeppelin arrives home in Friedrichshafen at 7 23 pm after a round trip to North and South America. Hugo Eckener leads the crew during the most ambitious journey since the airship circumnavigation, dodging a severe storm over the Rhone Valley en route from Seville to Friedrichshafen. The voyage began May 18, included Seville, South America, and Lakehurst New Jersey, totaling about 18 000 miles.

Elyria Population Up Slightly in Census Counts

Dispatches from Washington report Elyria's population at 25,606, two more than preliminary local counts of 25,604, with Lorain at 44,471, up 7,176. The city shows about a 25 percent gain over the past decade per census returns.

Changes in age limits for Elyria school entrance

Superintendent R C Maston announced new age limits effective near fall with the annual promotion plan replacing the semi-annual system. Children may enter first grade at six by February 1 following entry and kindergartens at five by February 1, shifting from November 10 and April 1 dates. Some children will be five years seven months or six years seven months at entry, though the change lowers the age for many.

Truck crash injures Elyria man on Dover Center Road

Clarke J. Vedder 28 of 445 East Broad Street was seriously injured when an oil truck overturned after the steering failed on Dover Center Road North Olmsted at noon. He suffered a compound fracture of the left leg a sprained foot and multiple lacerations and was taken to Elyria Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Will Not Prosecute Canadian Citizens

Prohibition bureau officials said they have virtually decided to nolle indictments charging more than a score of Canadian citizens with violating U S liquor laws. The Buffalo indictment was returned a year ago but defendants were not tried as they could not be extradited. With Canada enacting a liquor export ban to the United States officials said they have no disposition to prosecute Canadian citizens.

Child Crushed Between Trucks Near Elyria Farm

Eleven year old Arlene Lamphier of Indian Hollow Road was pinned between two trucks at her father's greenhouse at 9 15 a m. She sustained severe abdominal injuries and was rushed to Elyria Memorial hospital where her condition was listed as serious. Arlene attended East Carlisle school this past year and is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Reed Lamphier. The Lamphier farm lies about three miles from Elyria.

Tong warfare in New York continues with third slaying

In New York City, a Brooklyn laundryman Louis Lee, 43, believed Hip Sing Tong, was shot dead in his laundry back room. Will Decorate In Honor Of Centenary

Downtown Elyria will be decorated in red and white next week as the city marks Elyria High school charter centennial from 1830. The Merchants Division of the Elyria Chamber of Commerce directs the decorations including cards reading B. H. 1830 1930 on White Way lamp posts and long streamer decorations. Lamp posts will be dressed Tuesday and remain through the week with window displays by interested merchants.
