Elyria must hire 12 new firefighters within three weeks to avoid losing part of a $3.7 million SAFER grant awarded to increase the Fire Department to 75 personnel. A certified civil service list is due June 9, with hires on paper by June 26 and actual work start potentially delayed a few days.
A bronze memorial statue near Lorain City Hall depicts a kneeling officer and honors three Lorain police officers who were killed in the line of duty over 65 years ago. Police Chief Del Rivera noted the names were not on record until a decade ago, when efforts to memorialize them began.
A Charter One Bank employee found a skimmer device attached to an ATM outside the North Ridgeville branch. Mihail Vasilev, a 25-year-old Bulgarian with Illinois plates, was arrested nearby with a laptop, phones, GPS, and bonding agents in his car. Investigators say the case ties to a larger organization with links to Chicago and Bulgaria. The Secret Service assists.
North Ridgeville police say a 2 year old girl found in a neighbor's 4 foot pool appears to be a tragic accident and no charges are expected. Investigators note the pool gate was left open during yard work and family search teams covered nearby properties before the child was pronounced dead at EMH Regional Medical Center. The death is under further review with the building department. Funeral services are set for 11 a.m. at Christian Unity Church in Grafton.
