A 15 year old boy from Simi Valley is in good condition at County USC Medical Center after contracting bubonic plague during a Memorial Day visit to Silent Valley Recreation Camp. Riverside County Health Department evacuated the camp and posted warnings as tests confirmed the plague. A second outbreak was reported in Southern California weeks earlier in Diamond Bar, where a 55 year old man treated for bubonic plague was linked to fleas from park squirrels.

Nicaragua strike gains broad backing from business and clergy
In Managua a general strike called by Sandinista rebels drew broad support from the business community and Catholic clergy.
