Race Home: Three Boys Solve Missing Horses Dilemma
On a horseback trek they travel 4 percent of 13 miles to a cabin. Two horses vanish leaving Bob Bill and Jim. Bob and Bill ride the remaining horse while Jim walks. They plan who goes ahead who returns to fetch the boy. They must reach the ranch fastest. Bob rides at 20 mph, Bill walks 1 mile per 75 minutes, Jim walks 1 mile per 12 minutes. The solution finds the minimal total time for all to reach the ranch.
