Supreme Court narrows Miranda rights in silence ruling
In a 5-4 decision the Supreme Court expands conditions on invoking the right to remain silent. Justice Kennedy writes that a suspect must clearly state a wish to remain silent to invoke protection, while Justice Sotomayor dissents. The ruling stems from Van Chester Thompkins’s three hour interrogation before he implicated himself in a 2000 Michigan murder.
