Oberlin public forum draws under 20 for levies

A tiny turnout of fewer than 20 people attended a Oberlin public forum at the First Church on Tuesday night. Spokespersons outlined five levy questions with presentations including slide shows. Superintendent Gail Brubaker reviewed the district finances since 1976 and options to offset state funding cuts. The proposed 6 mill five-year emergency levy would raise about $372,900 annually and cost a $50,000 home under $92 yearly.

Lorain County Levees On Ballot In 1982 Election

A Lorain County community meeting outlined several countywide levies on the November 1982 ballot. Proposals include a 1-mill five year levy for the Lorain County Joint Vocational School generating about $1.5 million yearly, a 0.7-mill mental health levy also about $1.5 million, and a 0.3-mill park district levy for 20 years raising about $437,000 annually. Owners of a $50,000 home would pay roughly $12 to $15 per year depending on the levy.

Avon Lake voters face two levies on ballots

Avon Lake residents will decide on city and school levies. A 1.2 mill five year city levy funds emergency medical services and paramedic training, replacing an expiring 8 mill levy. A 3.31 mill five year school levy would raise about 750,000 to operate the district for 1982-83, with warnings of deeper cuts if it fails.

Bates resigns from New London council seat

Diana Bates, re-elected to a four year term, resigned at the end of the regular village council meeting citing an upcoming move to Greenwich. The resignation was accepted with regret and becomes effective immediately. The council has 30 days to fill the vacancy. after that, the mayor assigns the appointment.

Knights Inn clerk robbed at 4 40 am

Elyria police report a lone male robber held up a Knights Inn clerk at 325 Grisworld Road about 4 40 am today. The female clerk was ordered to open a cash register and a bank bag was taken before the suspect fled on foot through the motel parking lot.

WJW Fires Armstrong in Format Switch

Cleveland AM station WJW Radio fired Tom Armstrong who hosted 6 to 10 am as the station changes from music to news-talk. The 15 minutes of news will be on the hour and half hour, with Jeff Baxter handling the remaining music minutes, reflecting a national AM shift to news-talk and away from music.
