Lorain workers will cast ballot tonight on a two year pact for non uniformed employees after a tentative accord. Police earlier accepted a two year contract with a 4 percent retroactive raise for 1980 and 1981. Firefighters plan a bargaining session Thursday as Mayor Parker weighs a possible city income tax increase to fund raises.
Showers and thunderstorms likely tonight with small stream and urban flooding possible. Lows forecast in the low to mid 60s. Partial clearing Tuesday with a chance of more showers and storms. Highs 75 to 80. Details on Page B-1.
A force of 300 soldiers from Fort Sill moved to Fort Chaffee with 1,100 more to follow to restore order among Cuban refugees. Presidential aide Gene Eidenberg said non lethal force would be used as needed while Guardsmen patrols begin. About 45 refugees and guards were injured in the clashes. 18,000 Cubans on base, 2,000 residents outside, and 6 arrests for disorderly conduct.
The 1980 presidential primary season ends with 17 Republican and Democratic races across nine states, offering 696 Democratic and 418 Republican delegates. Ronald Reagan already has a secure path to the nomination with no active Republican challenger, while attention lags behind New Hampshire’s February results.
UPI reports the Supreme Court cleared Rep. Charles Diggs Jr. to start a three year sentence for mail fraud and payroll kickbacks. He inflated salaries of three staffers and put two nonworking aides on payroll. The political battle remains open as Carter trails in delegate counts with eight state primaries ahead. Kennedy aims to win California and New Jersey and perform well elsewhere.
Posters urging approval of the 9.8 mill emergency school operating levy Issue 18 appear around North Ridgeville city in the Tuesday primary. Students at North Ridgeville High School designed the posters, funded by the Citizens School Levy Committee.
Voters face a busy Lorain County primary with Democratic contests for county treasurer and common pleas court judge, plus a three way U S House race. Republicans present two hopefuls as they weigh a November contest. Four statewide amendments and twenty Lorain County measures cover schools local option and funding. A North Ridgeville levy of 9.8120 mills seeks emergency funding.
About 2,000 armed residents smashed a patrol car windshield and fought police outside Fort Chaffee during a riot linked to Cuban refugees. Six residents were arrested for disorderly conduct amid volleys of jeers and threats.
