Elyria fights turnpike site over necessity in bridge dispute

In a Lorain County open session the city of Elyria sued the Ohio Turnpike Commission to block appropriation of a city owned bridge site over the Black River. City attorney Robert Shoup blasted the commission for alleged abuse of discretion while the turnpike team argued adequate necessity for highway routing.

French air raid destroys Communist base near Hanoi

Fifty French warplanes bombed a large underground Communist base twelve miles southeast of Hanoi in pre dawn darkness. The base hidden by bamboo huts served as a key jumping off point for attacks on Hanoi. The raid, the biggest against rebels in the delta, demonstrates Viet Minh activity within the area a day after Reds seized a defense post along the Hanoi Haiphong lifeline.

Noted Oberlin Scholar Russell Jameson Dies

Oberlin College professor emeritus of romance languages Russell Parsons Jameson died at 2 a m at Allen Memorial Hospital. Born January 5, 1878 in Mansfield he held Oberlin degrees and a Paris doctor of letters. He taught at Oberlin from 1910 to 1920 and led the language department later. he retired in 1914. He was decorated with the Legion of Honor and chaired several academic and cultural groups. He is survived by his wife Florence Heath Jameson and daughter Marjorie J Nardell. Funeral Friday at Fairchild Chapel with burial in Westwood Cemetery.

Board Finds Oppenheimer Loyal Yet Denied Clearance

Washington report says a three man board found J. Robert Oppenheimer a loyal citizen with unusual ability to keep secrets but rejected reinstating his atomic clearance by 2-1 due to serious disregard for security, susceptibility to influence, disturbing conduct in the H-bomb program, and lack of candor. Senate critics call findings morally indefensible while Atomic Energy Committee members urge final commission action before June 30 contract expires. The AEC suspended his clearance last December on Eisenhower orders over alleged Communist links and hydrogen bomb delays.

Death Car Operator Charged In Fatal Route 303 Crash

Charles E Thorne 21 of 108 Malcolm Ct charged with traffic manslaughter and failure to yield the right of way after a collision at Route 303 and Hallover Road fatally injuring his uncle John Thorpe 35 of North Ridgeville. Thorpe bond set at 2500 on manslaughter and 250 on failure to yield. Arthur Jans 36 of Oberlin driver in the other car hospitalized with multiple injuries.

Cohn Says Charge By Army False

Roy M. Cohn, chief counsel to Senator McCarthy's investigating subcommittee, denied under oath the Army's charge that he used power as a "club."
