McCarthy Defense Denies Schine Assignment Charge
Roy M. Cohn, McCarthy chief counsel, denied the Army’s sworn charge that he sought a New York assignment for Pvt. G. David Schine and rejected testimony that he accused Pentagon officials of a double cross. He testified as the Army hearings resumed after a three day recess, while McCarthy pressed to place a telegram from ex Communist Paul Crouch in the record. Crouch had said the Justice Department banished him to Hawaii after Cohn linked their work to the Army inquiry. The atmosphere remained tense as Sen. McCarthy and allies attacked the handling of the inquiry, and Cohn contradicted testimony by Army Secretary Stevens and counselor Adams on Schine’s favored treatment.
