Work Relief Bill Faces Battle In The Senate
The $1,500,000,000 work relief bill, approved by the House in a 325 to 44 vote, heads to the Senate amid a fight over economy and earmarking. President Roosevelt’s program aims to aid 1.7 million unemployed in fiscal 1938, with Byrnes leading a drive to trim funds and shift control to states. Senate debates focus on broad authority, flood control earmarks, and road and public works spending, as southern Democrats and Republicans weigh eligibility and oversight.
