Test tube bongo born at Cincinnati Zoo sparks hope for endangered species
At the Cincinnati Zoo a 40-pound female African bongo was born after a 278 day gestation to an eland mother named Toledo. The infant is nursing with a feeding tube, as researchers pursue embryo transfer to preserve endangered species. The program, a joint effort by Cincinnati Zoo, Kings Island, and UC College of Medicine, envisions surrogate mothers for rare species and broader intercontinental embryo transfers. The birth follows four implantations from a Los Angeles Zoo embryo, with three unsuccessful pregnancies and one potential new birth in progress.
