Lorain Works to Absorb Duquesne Steel Transfer
U S Steel Lorain Works expects little immediate employment change from transferring some bar steel production from Pittsburgh's Duquesne Works. A company spokesman says capacity exists and production will be semi finished squares and rounds sold unfinished after rolling. The report notes 8.5 million still jobless, more than half of adult women employed for the first time, and a 30 minute drop in the average manufacturing workweek to 40.7 hours, signaling hiring rather than job shedding.

Year round Great Lakes shipping bill dies in committee
Cleveland Lake Carriers Association calls the defeat appropriate and says it will have little impact on the Port of Lorain. Lorain Port Authority executive director John Sulpizio notes opposition from environmental groups and that year-round navigation is not needed except in national emergencies. The bill’s failure follows lobbying led by Rep. David Bonier and includes a separate water projects measure creating a U S Canadian commission to study revival of the Great Lakes region. Sulpizio adds Lorain’s traffic is mainly upper lakes bulk shippers, not the St Lawrence corridor.
