Sinking of the Packard Ends New York Maritime Era Display

Charles B. Driscoll recalls the full rigged ship Benjamin F. Packard sunk off New York Harbor after decades of refitting and viewing as a sightseeing exhibit at Rye Playland. The tale covers its revival by Count Gosta Morner, later maintenance costs, and eventual destruction by owners seeking to cut losses. The piece also notes midtown Manhattan motorboat activity, the Shipyard district, and annual Grand Central Palace boat show.
