County collects electric firms tax payments in Lorain County
Ohio Edison and Cleveland Electric Illuminating paid second half property taxes totaling about 3.26 million to Lorain County. Ohio Edison remitted 1.27 million to County Treasurer J. Grant Keys and CEI contributed 1.99 million. Local school systems receive large shares including Avon Lake School System 1.40 million and Avon Lake city 271 thousand. CEI plans 34 million next year with a 300 million levy this year nationwide.

New London youth sentenced for concealed weapon
NORWALK An 18 year old New London youth was sentenced Wednesday by Huron County Common Pleas Court Judge Robert W Smyth to six months to five years in the Mansfield Reformatory. Marty Crouch of A D New London was found guilty of carrying a concealed weapon in an incident April 16.

The Coast Guard reports success in detecting ship discharges of oil through low cloud cover and fog using electronic remote sensors on patrol aircraft. The patrols deter illegal oil discharges off ocean coasts by providing timely, sensor based monitoring.

Riordan elected Blue Cross president in Northeast Ohio
Donald R. Riordan was elected president of Blue Cross of Northeast Ohio by the board of trustees to succeed Vernon R. Burt who retires Nov 1. Riordan, 45, will return to leadership after serving as senior vice president internal administration and previously with Milwaukee Blue Cross. Burt served 42 years and will step aside for younger leadership while Riordan conducts a broad review of health care roles and financing.
