Record crowds greeted the opening of three Old Fashioned Bargain Days as shoppers filled Broad Street and Middle Avenue. A light shower halted traffic briefly but merchants kept displays dry and restored racks quickly. Richard P. Portnick, president of the Elyria Merchants Association, said day one drew more shoppers than any previous event in 13 years.

Air Force C130 Crashes in Arkansas Killing Six
A four engine C130 from Little Rock Air Force Base crash landed in a Northeastern Arkansas pasture near an abandoned railbed. It exploded and burned, severing power lines and cutting electricity to many residents. Six aboard died, all but one body severely burned. The plane was en route to Blytheville and broke two utility poles, causing outages to Rural Electrification Cooperative members.

Officials of the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co announce a 9 million closed cycle cooling tower for the Port Clinton nuclear plant. The 450 foot high inverted cone tower will not discharge water to Lake Erie and will recycle lake water through a wooden-baffle system. Construction crews of about 870 are expected to finish by December 1974 with annual payroll near 900 thousand dollars. The plant, known as the Besse Davis Plant, is opposed by conservationists who fear lake ecology impacts from heated water, though proponents say the tower eliminates hot-water discharges.

Counties may jail violators in cities if overcrowded

B52s carry out heaviest raids in six months over Vietnam
UPI reports U S bombers conducted 19 raids in South Vietnam dropping at least four million pounds of bombs in 48 hours ending at noon. Targets included guerrilla lines in Laos and Cambodia while three veteran Communist regiments moved back into South Vietnam from Cambodia. Eighty miles northwest of Saigon and near the Cambodian border the strikes hit northern provinces Quang Tri and Thu Thien. Military says 44 Communist troops killed in Central Highlands, two U S helicopters shot down, and six Americans killed with 35 wounded in South Vietnam.

Lorain County will mail second half real estate tax bills about two weeks later than planned with delivery around mid August and payment deadline around mid September. Data Development and Research Inc. printed 116 662 bills and handed them to County Treasurer J Grant Keys for processing. About 40 000 bills are sent to 110 financial institutions that collect taxes from mortgage payments.
