Summit Proposed for UN Security Council Middle East

U S Proposes Geneva Talks on Nuclear Ban

Washington proposes to Russia to meet in Geneva in October to discuss preventing surprise attacks and potential joint study of practical aspects. Talks would include other governments and focus on technical methods of policing a ban on nuclear weapons tests without binding either side to a specific inspection zone.

U S Traffic Deaths Down in First Half of 1958

The National Safety Council reports U S traffic fatalities for the first half of 1958 fell seven percent from the previous year to 16 240, the lowest six month toll since 1954. June deaths declined 19 percent from 3 310 last year to 3 020 this year, marking the 18th of 19 months with a decrease.

Goldfine Prosecution Seen As Long and Difficult

Washington UPI dispatch reports U S Attorney Oliver Gasch says Bernard Goldfine's contempt of Congress case will take at least two years to prosecute. Gasch's office and UPI will handle the case as it moves through the process. The House Commerce Committee plans a vote on a citation against Sherman Adams amid an eight to zero subcommittee recommendation.

Kansas Hit Again By Flood

A million dollar flash flood struck Atchison Kansas for the second time in a month. More than 120 persons fled floodwaters from White Clay Creek after rains up to four inches. Cleanup continues from the prior flood as the creek again inundated the area. Severe flooding also hit Merriam Kansas with other spots in northeast Kansas and north central Missouri. Tornado funnels were sighted in Emilia Efforts at Kesley Iowa and nearby areas with a brief touch down in Kesley causing no damage.

Pittsburgh Steel Raises Prices Across Major Lines

Pittsburgh Steel Co joined four other major producers by announcing price increases averaging 4.50 dollars per ton. Republic Steel, Jones & Laughlin, Armco, and National Steel followed with boosts. President Allison Maxwell said the rise reflects necessary selling price adjustment to partly cover higher ware costs from new rates effective July 1. Increases ranged 3.50 to 5.50 per ton across hot rolled sheets cold rolled sheets hot rolled strip cold rolled strip and electrozine coated sheets.

Bond Issue Tax Estimate 74 Mills for Elyria Sewer

County Auditor Frank Ayres certified an average tax levy of 0.74 mills to support the proposed 1 681 000 Elyria sanitary sewer bond issue. The estimate covers the bond life, not current rates, and could vary yearly. Soldier absolved of blame in Korean theft incident

Hager B. Blevins of Circleville Ohio 25 was absolved of blame by the U S Army after shooting at two suspected thieves at a 7th Division supply dump. He fired three warning shots then two shots after they ignored warnings. The incident occurred last Tuesday while on sentry duty.
