Washington AP President Carter signed legislation making the Sunday after Labor Day Grandparents Day Sept 10 for this year only. The timing sparked interest from greeting card florists and senior groups as Hallmark prepared designs and sentiments for August press runs.
New York Times reporter Myron Farber remains free until noon Tuesday after the top court stalls his fines for not turning over investigatory files in the Dr. X murder case. Justice Byron White and New Jersey Supreme Court suspend civil penalties, with $1,000 against Farber and $5,000 a day against the Times pending material production. Trial judge William Arnold will hear a possible directed verdict request as the Riverdell Hospital case proceeds.
A forecast calls for scattered showers tonight with lows in the 60s and a 40 percent rain chance. Sunday remains cloudy with a 20 percent chance of showers and highs in the mid to upper 70s. North winds 15 to 19 mph. Friday highs around 74 and a low near 60. See page 12 for details.
Mayor Marguerite E Bowman said resurfacing of city streets planned since 1976 will begin within 30 days funded by 100000 borrowed two years ago. Bid from Griffith Blacktop at 112000 won the contract but trimming is needed as several streets from the 1976 plan may be dropped due to budget limits.
Senator Edward M. Kennedy accuses Carter of leadership failure and rejects the administration plan as too vague and inflationary. In Detroit, UAW President Fraser distances from Carter and backs Kennedy’s broader health program, criticizing the plan as halting and timid.
A man without a helmet died in a morning motorcycle crash on Gateway Boulevard after losing control at about 10 a.m. He struck a fire hydrant after hitting a curb twice, with witnesses noting speeds near 60 mph. Police withheld the victim's name pending relatives' notification. The incident marks the county's second fatality since the no helmet law began on July 11.
Edward Andy, 76, owner of Andy's Hardware on Oberlin Avenue Lorain, fired four shots at two would be robbers. Henry Cruz, 24, was wounded in the buttock and later hospitalized. Carl Allen Taylor, 19, was arrested at his home. Both suspects jailed pending charges of attempted aggravated robbery. Police recovered the getaway car nearby. Andy said the incident shows preparedness and calm under pressure.
