Austria Plans Rail Progress
The Austrian government plans to push railway electrification with 80 million dollars set aside for unemployment relief, mostly for repairs rather than new electrification. Only about a quarter of Austria’s 8,200 km network is electrified, with main lines in Tyrol Salzburg Upper Austria and Styria already electric. The Tauern line’s electrification was completed May 14 and Vienna to Salzburg is the next target. Experts question partial electrification and favor a total, five to six year program funded in advance. Industrialists and workers back rapid, full electrification, expecting 8,000 to 10,000 new jobs. The decision is seen as influenced by social and political factors beyond economics.
