Troops with tanks and tear gas dispersed the bonus army camps in Washington. Rioting the previous day killed one and wounded many, as veterans fled or returned to their ruined shelters. Infantry backed by tanks cleared camp marks along the Anacostia as the siege ended with capitulation.
Mayor W H Van Oster proposes an $18 280 salary cut for city employees in the 1933 budget. He voluntary cut $500 from his $4 000 yearly pay. Health, park, safety, service and water departments face reductions with safety absorbing $13 891 and overall general fund cut about $15 000, totaling roughly $265 000 under the proposal.
Los Angeles July 29 Lina Basquette dancer and film star was taking poison in a self inflicted death attempt. She was removed to her home from Georgia Street Receiving Hospital after treatment and physicians said she was dying though emergency measures had some effect. Her name had been linked with Jack Dempsey formerly heavyweight champion.

Mrs. Rose Rutledge, 35, was jailed in Willard on July 29 charged with fatally shooting her husband Clay Rutledge, 37, last night. Maurice Stamm of Cleveland posted 500 bond in Lorain after pleading not guilty to disorderly conduct resisting arrest and attempting to incite a riot. Stamm is charged as leader of an unemployment uprising here Tuesday.
An all night vigil at rural schools is being considered by deputy sheriffs and juvenile authorities after repeated vandalism. Henry F. Steffen of Cleveland road and Stetson road received a jury award of $2000 in a state highway department taking for Route 2 widening from Cuyahoga County to Elyria. The state had previously offered $1000. A related case connected with this improvement was initiated.
Joe Frassl a local tailor sent eight presents to a friend in Germany. The package labeled overalls at 95 cents was returned as refused. The German import duty on the package totaled eight marks and sixty pfennig about $2.10 in American money. The recipient refused the parcel because he would need a week’s wages to pay the duty.
Los Angeles July 29 delegates to the 40th annual Walther League convention vote a 405000 building program for U S projects including additions at Wheatbridge Colorado and a tubercular sanitarium. Thelma Krutschke wins first prize for an oratorical contest with Florence Jarmish and Elmer Burns in second and third places. Florence Gast receives honorable mention. President Hoover issued a formal explanation of his order that sent cavalry infantry and tanks into Washington to drive the bonus army from federal property. He said troops were necessary to end rioting and civil authority defiance. Waters of the bonus expeditionary force blamed the White House for bloodshed and vowed to mobilize elsewhere.
The Bonus Army driven from Washington is welcome to come and stay as long as it likes in Kanto Johnstown Pennsylvania. Mayor Eddie McCloskey telephoned leaders there and linked with Father James R. Cox, a militant Pittsburgh priest and champion of the movements, though he did not say how veterans would be cared for.
