Lorain man found dead after missing week with suicide note
The coroner ruled death by own action in the case of George Mertus a 57 year old Lorain man who disappeared for more than a week. His body was found with a bullet wound in a thicket near railroad tracks between the B and O roundhouse and Thew Shovel Company. Mertus had recently divorced and was ordered to pay alimony. He left a note for his brother asking him to collect insurance pay funeral costs and keep the remainder. The body was in a decomposed state when discovered.

Erie, July 29. Fifteen crew members and one woman drowned when the sand dredge George J Whalen sank after cargo shifted eighteen miles west of Dunkirk in Lake Erie last night. Six crewmen survived, brought to Erie by the freighter Amassa Stone. Coast Guardsmen could not locate bodies. Survivors said Captain W H Neil and his crew found three men with life belts. The George J Whalen’s captain W T Waage went down with the boat along with second mate Marshall Emline and chief engineer Arthur Willets. Waage and Willets were from Cleveland and Emline from Sandusky. The cook and his wife were believed from Cleveland but his last name was unknown. Survivors knew only the cook’s first name Charles.
