North Ridgeville residents will discuss a five year 2.5 mill permanent improvement levy at a Monday forum in the Junior High School cafeteria. The levy generating about 490000 annually expires this year and may be renewed with a Nov. 6 ballot, with action expected at the Aug. 13 board meeting.
USX Corp will pay about 34 million dollars in penalties and cleanup costs for wastewater dumping from its Gary Indiana mill. The consent decree resolves a 1988 lawsuit alleging discharge limit violations and other Clean Water Act breaches from 1983 to 1988. The package includes 1.6 million in penalties, 25 million for equipment and a management plan, 2.5 million for a sediment study, and 5 million for cleanup of contamination locations.
One dozen Lorain parents appeared in Lorain Municipal Court on curfew violation charges for their children. Assistant Prosecutor Mark Provenza said these parents were summoned for appearing after their kids were seen on streets past 11 p.m. Each pleaded no contest and was fined 100 dollars with 75 dollar suspended on good behavior for a year. Provenza added three to seven more parents may face similar charges later.
