An Elyria driver died and at least five people were injured when a car lost control, became airborne and crashed into the pits at Lorain County Speedway in South Amherst. James Harsh, 28, died at Elyria Memorial Hospital. Several others were hospitalized, with two airlifted to Cleveland Metro. The incident occurred on the sixth lap of a pro stock race, prompting rapid emergency response and track evacuation.
A Liberian tanker Shinoussa struck two barges near Redfish Island in the Houston Ship Channel. One barge carrying 18 000 barrels of No 5 heavy fuel oil sank. the other barge with 24 000 barrels leaked fuel but remained attached to the tug Chandy I. A mile long slick formed offshore near Kemah as booms were deployed and cleanup began.
