Kennedy open to backing other Dem candidate
Senator Edward Kennedy signaled he could back a candidate other than himself or President Carter if economic positions align, while a Capitol Hill move seeks to let delegates vote freely at next month's Democratic convention. Carter would otherwise be nominated with dozens of votes needed, as policy figures Muskie Mundale Udall and Jackson were named as possible alternatives. Kennedy said he welcomed any candidate and would not block others, insisting he has nothing to fear from the delegates’ judgments.
