Security Council urges South Africa sanctions and end to emergency

The Security Council voted 13 to 0 for voluntary economic sanctions on South Africa and demanded lifting the state of emergency that led to 910 detentions. The United States and Britain abstained while France abstained on an amendment seeking mandatory sanctions if apartheid endured. France co-sponsored the main resolution with Denmark.

Borg-Warner Air Conditioning Group Aims Fortune 500 Status

Elyria’s air conditioning division of Borg-Warner, freed from its parent, is expected to be a Fortune 500 company in its own right. Robert A. Morris, vice president for communications, stated the plan and timeline.

Borg-Warner to spin off air conditioning unit into new company

Borg-Warner officials announced the creation of a new company to house its air conditioning operations alongside Luxaire. The Elyria plant employs about 450 workers. the unit posted 1985 first-half sales of 324.9 million and a 2.7 million profit. The move, still subject to board and IRS approval, aims for a tax-exempt share distribution and minimal impact on staff and customers. Joseph R. Rubli of Elyria said the reorganization could push the firm toward Fortune 500 status and greater autonomy.
