American heavyweight John Tate, 6-4 and 228 pounds, beat Poland’s Andrzej Blegalski in a hard bout, but a suspected cut over his left eye and an ice pack raised questions about his readiness. He must pass a medical again to face West Germany’s Peter Hussing next, while Teofilo Stevenson looms as a potential semifinal rival. Tate, a Knoxville garbage man, fought through fatigue and a tough Pole, earning four of five judges’ votes, but concerns about power and defense persist as he advances in Montreal.

Johnson the Browns strongman stands firm at 33

At 33, he backs his late season 1975 form and cites peers like Jim Marshall as proof players can excel beyond 30. Coach Forrest Gregg values his experience and Johnson notes recovery from past injuries and a focus on reaction speed over raw sprint pace.
