New details on MacArthur foreign talks after Japan surrender

The Japanese Foreign Ministry disclosed meetings between General Douglas MacArthur and top Japanese officials after Japan's 1945 surrender. Shigemitsu met MacArthur in Yokohama 17 days after the war to persuade him to abandon plans for direct American military rule, challenging the common view of MacArthur as an imperial figure.

Motive puzzling as White House intruder is slain

Police say cab driver Chester M. Plummer, 30, scaled the White House fence and threatened a guard with a three foot pipe before being shot. The Secret Service and police described unclear motives and noted no known grievance against the government.

Davis expects monthly utility costs near 15 dollars and total project cost around 30000 dollars with minimal maintenance beyond roof mowing.

AmShip Faces False Claims Suit Over 5.4 Million Claim

The Justice Department planned to file a countersuit in the Court of Claims seeking forfeiture of AmShip's 5.4 million claim under the False Claims Act and about 500 thousand in damages for a four month FBI and agency investigation. Allegations center on illegal campaign contributions charged to government contracts and destruction of records. AmShip is part of American Ship Building Co headquartered in Lorain with corporate offices in Cleveland. Steinbrenner, linked to the Yankees, denies wrongdoing and campaign funds were charged to the government. Local AmShip officials declined comment.

An overfused electrical circuit energized an extension cord to ignite a blaze at the Washington Tower Building on Lodi Street. 23 people were injured and $50,000 in damage occurred. three residents were hospitalized, including George Ellsworth in serious condition.
