New approach lifts WGCL from six month ratings slump
WGCL-FM shows spring 1986 Arbitron ratings up from a six month downturn. The teen oriented rock station had slipped by nearly a third in the Cleveland market since last summer. In January George Oliva II became VP of programming for WGCL and WERE AM, with Kim Colebrook pushing a new marketing and promotions strategy.

Radio rivals in Cleveland battle for audience share
Oliva notes WGCL focuses on its own performance rather than WMMS moves. He says if WGCL plays hits better and longer, it will attract listeners. He concedes WMMS is a market powerhouse, blaming WGCL slip and morning personalities leaving town for its recent surge. WGCL emphasizes music strategy.

WMMS CHR hybrid contrasts with WGCL pure CHR claim
Oliva compares WMMS to a CHR and Album Oriented Rock mix, noting WMMS plays 32 songs that aren’t hits yet while WGCL is positioned as a purer CHR. He argues WMIJI FM and WLTF FM are lighter rock and less competitive. Despite not fully rebounding, Oliva believes WGCL’s strategy is proving effective and just beginning to pay off.
