Storms knock out power across Lorain County with outages

Heavy thunderstorms Friday night caused scattered outages in Amherst South Amherst and North Olmsted with Ohio Edison and Cleveland Illuminating Co. reporting hundreds of calls and about 1000 customers without power. Downed wires and trees disrupted areas including Bay Village North Olmsted Rocky River and Avon Lake. One injury occurred when 14 year old George Brandt Jr. rode a downed wire and was hospitalized in fair condition.

ATHENS ALAP Dave Hamlin won 1000 pounds of ice in a W2YP FM contest for the best How Hot Is It joke after claiming pigs melted and grease ran into fields. Susan Lauderdale of the station said listeners called in jokes for an hour while judges selected Hamlin. Other runners up praised hot humor with playful lines about trees, dogs, and birds.
