Elyria Board to Probe Local Labor Preference on School Job

The Elyria school board delegated the hiring dispute over the Lake Avenue school project to president E. J. Howenstine. Robert Stephen of the Elyria Bricklayers Union warned that local workers were passed over as six out of town men took jobs despite a promise to favor Elyria labor except for two “key men.” Union president Stephen cited a $1.25 local scale and reports of out of town bricklayers earning 90 cents an hour. Board members said they lack clear legal authority to enforce local hiring but will press for work for Elyria men where possible.
