Iran holds senior al-Qaida figures despite US calls to deport

Iran said it is holding senior al-Qaida members and would hunt others on its soil, as the United States urged Tehran to turn over prisoners. Intelligence minister Ali Yunesi claimed many al-Qaida elements are in custody, naming no individuals. US officials questioned the prison status of detainees, but urged their expulsion to appropriate jurisdictions. The White House stressed the need to prevent al-Qaida from operating in Iran, amid ongoing discussions with foreign intelligence services.
