State shifts control of major Ohio tech grant funds
Ohio moves to remove about 20 percent of Third Frontier grant money from the nine member commission that oversees tech grants. The funds, about 360 million over two years, will mostly be used by the Ohio Board of Regents to recruit top researchers and attract more federal and private research dollars. Critics warn the shift bypasses an objective vetting process and could steer funds to politically favored projects, while supporters say the move aligns with statewide high tech goals.

Detective work may have solved the monk identity mystery
An 87 year old Orthodox monk at St. Herman of Alaska Monastery may obtain a Social Security card as Edward Howard. Documentary evidence points to him being Edward Howard, not Earnest Thompson, with records from birth, draft, census, and Cleveland schools aligning to Edward Howard born 1919 in Virginia. If approved, he may receive health care benefits after illness last year.
