Seven people including a security guard die as fire sweeps the 12th floor of the Downtown Howard Johnsons Motel in New Orleans. More than 450 guests evacuated while others escaped by bedsheet ropes as smoke and flames spread. eight rescued from smoke later.
Hollywood actor Van Heflin died at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital at 6:43 a.m. He suffered a heart attack June 6 while swimming at his apartment, leaving him unconscious since then. Heflin, age 60, won an Oscar and was known as an actor's actor.
The Blossom Center event on September 3 features a specially written four movement symphony reciting Ohio city names including Elyria, arranged by Joseph Levine and conducted by Louis Lane with the Cleveland Orchestra. Chorus selections from My Fair Lady Sound of Music and Hair will be included to benefit the Lorain County Arts Council.

U S District Court Judge James C Connell ruled the state has sovereign immunity in the $4 million wrongful death action filed by Louis Schroeder for his son William killed during Kent State unrest. Defendants included former Gov James Rhodes Adjutant General Sylvester Del Corso Brig Gen Robert Canterbury and university president Robert White. The judge found Rhodes acted in good faith and the state cannot be sued without consent. This ruling completes the dismissals against the state in three similar suits by other families.
Eugene B. Smith 66 of 125 Princeton Ave. died at 7 07 am at Elyria Memorial Hospital after a two month illness. A Republican since 1943 and council president since 1959, he retired last August from U S Steel. He is survived by his wife Miriam, a son David, a daughter Faith, three grandchildren and two sisters. Funeral arrangements are set.
Elyria Area Chamber of Commerce explores a three year downtown uplift using professional and voluntary help. A questionnaire is sent to 35 downtown property owners and merchants to gauge support for a $30 000 annual administrative budget. A project director, advisory group, and paid staff would lead the effort independent of federal renewal projects.
Local 971 of the United Auto Workers and Bendix Westinghouse Automo tive Air Brake Co. reached a tentative agreement subject to ratification by about 1,000 production workers. A union ratification meeting is set for Sunday at the Capitol Theater. Details await after the vote.
Government data show a six tenths of one percent jump in June living costs, the largest since April 1970, driven by groceries and transportation. The Consumer Price Index reaches 121.5, with earnings up 1.74 to 12.57 per hour for about 45 million workers, and some cost-of-living clauses triggering small pay increases.
