Arab guerrillas hijack Israeli jet from Rome to Tel Aviv

An El Al Boeing 707 carrying 48 aboard was hijacked by armed Palestinians over the Mediterranean shortly after leaving Rome. The plane landed in Algiers where the crew and aircraft were seized while passengers, including two Americans, were held or released as negotiations continued. The hijacking was claimed by the Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

Tragedy at Lorain Break Wall Drowns 5 Year Old

A five year old boy fell from Lorain's east break wall and drowned after fishing with his father George Pack and uncle Harvey Murray. Murray, Barry Pack, and the father were among those treated at St Joseph's. bystander Jeffery Meade alerted Coast Guard. The incident occurred just after 11 p.m. and the body was recovered with rescue efforts continuing.

Elyria Board approves raise for starting teachers

The Elyria Board adopted a base starting salary of 6100 for first year teachers. A 250 raise for starting pay was approved, with a bachelor’s degree and experience affecting scale within a prorated system. Lightning strikes Eaton man during hay baling on Chestnut Ridge

L John Myers of Chestnut Ridge Road Eaton Township was killed when a lightning bolt struck him while baling hay in a field on Chestnut Ridge Road. Wayne Dawson 17 of Syria helped at the scene. Dawson drove a tractor wagon. Myers was stacking hay on the wagon with his father Lawrence Myers. He died at Elyria Memorial Hospital at 4 20 PM.

Storm Strikes Elyria Area Causing Fires and Outages

A summer storm blasted Elyria and nearby areas with high winds and lightning. One man, John Myers, 25, died after being struck near an Eaton Township farm. A 1-year-old boy in Cascade Park was uninjured. Power outages lasting up to 2 hours and 15 minutes affected Ridgeview Shopping Center, Duplex Foundry, and residential zones. Minor damage included toppled trees and downed lines at Lodi and Chestnut, with several fires and flooding reported.

Elyria schools approve nine million one hundred eighteen thousand six hundred thirty four budget

The Elyria board of education approved a 1989 budget of 9 118 634 up from 7 740 642 the previous year. Salary totals rise with teachers payroll at 5 390 000 and retirement funds up to 300 000. The plan includes capital outlay 123 865 and other increases across library supplies and maintenance. A catch‑up program will address prior year cuts.
