Meinke wins Lorain County Soap Box Derby trip
Amherst Lorain County race on Rt. 58 produced 12 year old Meinke from Ely School as top winner. He clocked 22.1 in heat one and led to victory over 12 year old Ed Brady for a trip to Akron August 24. Brady earned second with a 31.9 best time and $250 savings bond. Kim Meyers and Ron Wantuck finished third and fourth with trophies and bonds.

Forty nine entrants raced on Rt. 58 with Dave Meinke of Elyria taking the title in 32.0 seconds on the 950 foot course. Ed Brady of Lorain finished second and shared fastest time honors at 31.9 seconds.

Tragedy as 17-year-old struck by freight train at Hole-In-The-Wall
A 17-year-old North Ridgeville youth, Jerry Lee Wilson, was fatally struck by the lead engine of a Norfolk and Western freight train while walking along the railbed near Hole-In-The-Wall Beach after a swimming party. He died at Lorain St. Joseph Hospital at 7:45 p.m. The incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. Wilson's widow Linda Lee and sister Sandra Ross were present.
