Fire injures 21 as Washington Towers blaze erupts
A morning fire at the Washington Towers apartments on Washington Avenue and Lodi Street injures at least 21 people, 11 of them firefighters, with four in critical condition. Fire units from Elyria and Lorain battled the six story building, smoke pouring from upper floors as crews searched for victims and residents fled or were rescued. The Red Cross aided, power was shut off, and officials debated inspections of old downtown buildings. The blaze was eventually brought under control by about 11:40 a.m. and a follow up report was promised.
