Warren Lauer works with his father to harvest wheat near Oberlin using a combine that threshes and stores grain in a 25 bushel bin. When full, wheat moves to a wagon headed to the elevator where farmers sell at about $1.76 a bushel.
President Eisenhower affirmed that food aid for hungry East Germans would not be halted despite Soviet protests. Soviet High Commissioner Vladimir Semyonov demanded immediate suspension, accusing West Berlin aid of recruiting fascist agents. East German residents massed at state stores, urging acceptance of the $15 million in food aid.
Communist forces opened a late surge on Allied central front posts in Korea while Panmunjom cease fire talks lingered. Chinese troops pressed scattered positions, with a reinforced 1000-man unit attacking the Kumhwa Kumsong bulge and other outposts near Hyon hill and the Kumsong river. In Germany, East German purges and harsh penalties for rebels were reported along with arrests of Justice Ministry officials as strikes continued in major factories.
The House Un American Activities Committee unanimously concluded Methodist Bishop G Bromley Oxnam has no Communist Party ties. Republicans argued he sent his name to fronts while Democrats defended him as exercising citizen rights after nearly 19 hours of hearings.

American officers report that Chinese successes in the central front bulge exposed the South Korean army’s inexperience and vulnerability. They warn without American airpower, artillery, and supplies the ROKs could not mounted a mass counterattack. Rhee threatens to push 16 divisions toward the Yalu if postwar talks fail within 90 days.
Washington II Armed Services chiefs review long-range manpower as draft calls could fall about 35 percent to 15 000 monthly after a Korea truce. Defense Secretary Charles E Wilson says cuts hinge on high voluntary enlistments and no world crisis. Some officials doubt enrollments will stay high post ceasefire.
Lorain County farmers near the end of wheat harvest with yields of 30 to 34 bushels per acre, above state average. Elevators priced wheat around 1.76 a bushel as some store for future government sale at 2.27. Amherst residents on South Main street protest proposed sanitary sewer at a City Council meeting. Council had authorized drafting the legislation despite petitions. 26 residents favor the sewer, 14 oppose, with the opposers owning large lots and controlling over half the street frontage.
President Rhee renewed demands that Chinese Communist forces leave Korea within six months after armistice day. He said any promises to cooperate on a truce were conditional and that if his terms are unmet Korea would act on its own. The note from Washington did not satisfy him, extending the uncertainty over a possible truce.
Barbara Boyd 11 daughter of Mr and Mrs William Boyd of 125 Adelbert St sustained injuries to her left ankle and elbow after being struck by a car on Tuesday on Lake Avenue north of Elyria near Griswold Road. The car was driven by Roy B Crymer of Caxton former Elyria High athletic director and head football coach who said she crossed in front of his vehicle before he could stop.
A thief broke into the glove compartment of Scotty Haislet’s car at 346 Oberlin Road last night, stealing $262.50 in cash and about $90 in checks from two bank deposit bags. A second Haislet car and a Peter Nardecchia’s car in nearby garages were ransacked but nothing else taken. Police note the glove box was locked, but the garage and car were not.

Columbus Ohio death report notes emeritus Frank Cary Caldwell, Ohio State University’s first engineering professor, died at age 84 after a hip injury from a fall a month earlier. He taught at OSU for many years and helped establish the engineering program.
