Elyria City Council in regular session urged residents to renew the two mill operating levy. If approved in November it would fund city services for two years, continuing about $145000 yearly to the general fund. Councilman Dale Kellogg stressed the renewal is vital to maintain current service levels.
Mayor Henry W. Ault announced a public meeting at Elyria High School auditorium at 7 30 p m Thursday July 30 to explain the city's dispute with the Ohio Turnpike Commission over the route through the corporation. Robert Shoup special attorney will attend to discuss litigation to route the road outside Elyria.
Prague radio reported that Czechoslovakia protested to the United States over freedom balloons launched along the West German Czech frontier. The note to Dr James B Conant called the act provocative and the balloons carried messages of hope and news of the East German uprising and Beria’s purge.
Elyria city council voted last night to repeal the three percent tax on entertainment admissions effective August. The move follows a long discussion sparked by theater operator Marvin Frankel who argued the tax harms theaters amid dwindling attendance. The tax raised about $6,000 in the previous year.

Federal judge Albert A. Ridge in Kansas City blocked Nashville attorney Free Farmer from forcing former President Truman to produce records on U.S. entry into the Korean conflict. Farmer sought Truman as a defense witness in a federal income tax case, arguing he paid only one third of his 1949 tax.
Virginia Democrat Senator Harry Bird said he asked FBI Director Hoover to confirm or deny J P Matthews claim that Protestant ministers are the largest single group supporting Communism in America. Bird pressed Matthews to retract or be called a demagogue and Matthews faced pressure from President Eisenhower over accusations.

Former Haitian president Dumarsais Estime, age 53, died at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York. Elected in 1946, he resigned in 1949 after Haiti's senate rejected a constitutional amendment allowing a consecutive term.

In a three hour session Elyria City Council acted on ordinances reports and contracts including zoning limits on a 355 Ohio Street mixed use project and a plan to install water lines on Morgan Spring Apple King and Brace streets. The panel approved water service to Hall road via a county line and master meter and funded a $3500 tool storage building for the recreation commission. Council also endorsed Havens and Emerson for a half year of water system planning and backed a safety license for transit drivers as well as sidewalks for Valley View by Lorain Metropolitan Housing Authority at about 1200 dollars.
The city board of control approved contracts totaling 94384 for paving four streets with reinforced concrete and resurfacing other streets. Ohio Engineering Co. of Lorain received 79384 for Hawthorne Longfellow 17th and 38th streets, while H J Hart Construction won a not to exceed 15000 contract for resurfacing under the city engineering department.

Kellogg asked Solicitor Richard Baird to start formal annexation procedures. the proposal was referred to the annexation committee.
Elyria City Schools Board halted a discussion on appointing an assistant superintendent after a midnight adjournment. Pierre Smith advocated shifting duties to the high school principal George Miraben to conserve funds amid a pending need for 10 to 15 new classrooms. The board plans to resume the topic at a July 27 special meeting.
