Lorain County sees higher unemployment in June with Elyria at 9.9 percent and Lorain at 11.6 percent, up from May but down from June 2009. statewide rate falls slightly to 10.5 percent as job gains lag due to census worker terminations.
Elyria officials await final grant approval to fund a full two lane rebuild of the Ford Road bridge over the Black River. The project would cost about 2.6 million dollars after preliminary approval lists the city for up to 2.5 million in aid. The existing one lane crossing closed in 2008 due to poor condition and must be moved and realigned.
Jill and Edgar Anthony recall Brentwood Lake as a vibrant ecosystem until Spitzer Hardware breached a leaking dam with county and township help. The lake has dried up, tall weeds replace cool water, a Waterfall Drive bridge is closed, and an estimated one million dollars is needed for fixes with no plan in place.
The body of Emma Nahas a 20 year old Midview graduate was found offshore in Euclid Lake Erie. Autopsy confirmed drowning as the cause and Nahas was identified by outfit clothing and description. Relatives and authorities coordinated with Euclid firefighters police coast guard and the coroner. The discovery followed Nahas going missing after swimming from a 48 foot cabin cruiser on July 8 amid a storm.
Elyria Lorain County Sheriff Phil Stammitti announced layoffs of Capt. Rich Resender who runs the jail and Capt. John Reiber who oversees the law enforcement division, plus secretary Gail Brunetto, effective Aug. 3 due to ongoing budget woes.
