Two Chicago Officers Killed by Sniper in Cabrini Homes

Two white Chicago police sergeants were shot dead by a sniper while talking with neighborhood youths at the Cabrini Homes housing project on the North Side. Officers described the attack as a firefight as they attempted to reach the wounded men.

Doctor faces drug counts against Elyria physician

Elyria police hold Dr Epitacio A Catalan on four charges of obtaining narcotics by fraud and misrepresentation based on Dayton warrants. He is to be arraigned in Dayton Municipal Court. Catalan, who has offices on Abbe Road North, was arrested in Elyria yesterday and faces claims of obtaining Demerol in May and June. A prior Lorain County acquittal is noted.

Odor control plans eyed for Miller Ditch area south of Elyria

Lorain County officials tour Miller Ditch near Fuller Road to curb foul odors from a dry gulch that sometimes carries sewage from local homes. An immediate fix may enclose about 30 feet of ditch with tile while a long term solution envisions a sanitary sewer system for the area. Authorities and residents attended the inspection led by Commissioners Pincura Keron and Ritenauer with engineers and health officials.

Judge orders retrial for four freed in Mall bank theft

Lorain County Common Pleas Judge LeRoy F. Kelly ruled the four men indicted for the Aug. 16 1968 theft of 93000 from the Midway Mall bank must stand trial in Ohio court despite federal acquittal. The defendants Coates Grisham Diorio and Drago posed as Brink's guards to collect the cash. Bond statuses vary with Drago still at large. Trial set tentatively for Aug 24.

Wellington school board member dies at game

Ralph William Brown a Wellington school board member and longtime baseball coach died from a heart attack during a Little League game at Wellington Athletic Field. The 42 year old veteran lived at 133 Fourth Street Wellington and was pronounced dead at Southern Lorain County Hospital at 7 20 p m He had served on the Wellington school board since January and coached the Cardinals for six years with prior World War II military service.

Elyria Memorial Hospital Expansion Scores Setback

Elyria Memorial Hospital plans a 121 bed, 9 million dollar expansion without Hill Burton funds after the Metropolitan Health Planning Corp rejects the project. The group cites a county bed surplus as the reason, approving other area expansions in Ashtabula and Bay View. Hospital official James C. Brown says the expansion will proceed regardless of Hill Burton funding.

Bus Crash Driver With Bad Record Faces Indefinite License Revocation

A New Jersey bus operator involved in a deadly crash near Allentown has a long history of license suspensions and arrests. Hubert Daye, 44, of Montclair, was identified among the injured amid investigations. authorities ordered his license revoked indefinitely. The incident left seven children dead and 52 injured on U.S. 22 as rain slicked conditions contributed to the crash.
