Black smoke pours from the Garden Street landfill as fire crews battle smoldering material. An inoperative bulldozer and ruptured hoses hindered efforts, with private haulers turning away. City officials consider renting a bulldozer while seeking county-wide disposal options.
Aztec Chemical Co. 555 Garden St. says it resolved the one formal health department complaint about odors and faces a nuisance charge in Elyria Municipal Court. The firm notes steps taken since January including air scrubber upgrades, an underground skimmer and spill tank, bulk storage tanks, landscaping, and cooperation with city officials.
The FAA says its system to foil hijackers has been proven in field tests and is suitable for widespread airline use. Dr. John T. Dailey, the agency’s chief psychologist, told the Airline Passenger Association conference that ten months of operational experience showed the program is practical and reduces hijackings.
Eastern, Pan American, Trans World and Continental use the deterrent system at several airports. New Orleans International became the first to install it across an entire airport this week. Dailey cites 1.5 million passengers screened with only a few dozen denied passage and about 20 arrested. The program blends a behavior profile for staff to spot hijackers and magnetometers to detect concealed weapons. Eastern Airlines helped lead the adoption and reports a lower hijack rate. The rollout aims for gradual airline acceptance and full coverage with training and systematic introduction.
Leslie A. Smith, 14, of Rocky River died after pushing her 13 year old friend Mary Lynn Fisher from an oncoming Norfolk and Western freight train near railroad tracks. Fisher was critically injured but responding to treatment at Lakewa Hospital.
Striking Cleveland Transit System workers voted to end the 17 day wildcat walkout and return to duties tomorrow. A union meeting at the Public Music Hall approved resumption as a contract proposal offers a 75 cent raise over two years.
Oberlin-Creation of a second vocational education school in Lorain County is under discussion. Superintendent William R. Burton says plans for a package sewage plant, not sewer connections, led the board to proceed. The site will open in September 1971 with 700 students and reach 1,200 capacity in four to five years.
Richard Sargent of Indianapolis appeals his armed robbery conviction from a June 19 jury verdict after being acquitted on two first degree murder charges. The filing came yesterday.
Sargent was acquitted of killing Louis Horwath in the 1968 Quarry Road holdup but found guilty of armed robbery. He received a 10 to 25 year sentence in Ohio Penitentiary, then sent to Indiana to serve an earlier robbery term. Attorneys Sherman and Haynes were paid 1500 each. no counsel yet for appeal. Sherman says murder acquittal not jeopardized by appeal.
